I could not get over my shock when I found out I am going to have a story in the Cleis Press anthology Best Gay Romance 2014. Why? Because of how much I loved past editions.
“The Baker” by Neil Plakcy. Originally appeared in Best Gay Romance 2009 (Cleis Press), and re-appears in the 2013 edition. Edited by R. D. Cochrane and Timothy J. Lambert.
This story of an unemployed man stopping in at a bakery to spend his last dollar before heading out to look for a job was the perfect opener for the 2013 volume, where I first read it. Immediately accessible, the story engages all the senses and ends on a high note. Like one of the confections sold by the baker referred to in the title, it is guaranteed to make you smile.
