“You’re a Dog” by Edward Moreno, Best Gay Romance 2013 (Cleis Press). Edited by R. D. Cochrane and Timothy J. Lambert.
This story felt very much like a modern fairy tale, what with the many references it made to the character called Ben being a giant, and hailstones raining from the sky, and so on and so forth. I expected it to end with a “and the moral of the story is” type blatant commentary on the fact that during the course of the story the main character is engaging in two very different types of relationships at once, but it never did. Instead it kept me entertained while I reconciled that issue on my own, which is as it should be. A very smart person I used to work for likes to say “Art should raise questions, not provide answers,” and I agree one hundred percent. This story raises interesting questions.
