“Cody Barton” by Martin Delacroix, Best Gay Romance 2013 (Cleis Press). Edited by R. D. Cochrane and Timothy J. Lambert.

Zach’s best friend Cody has been withdrawn since his brother’s death during a fraternity hazing. Recently, he tried to kill himself. Now he’s come to live with Cody’s family, because living with his own parents was no longer an option.

Not that Zach’s life is exactly – to quote Freddie Mercury – a bed of roses or pleasure cruise. He goes through tribulations of his own right after Cody moves in. But the two boys stick together, and their friendship deepens, until one night during Spring Break, when they get drunk together and spill the last of their secrets….

This tale touches on quite controversial territory. I don’t want to give away just what the nature of it is; you should read it and find out for yourself. Suffice it to say this one will give you some things to think about.
