Short Stories 365/70 | N.S. Beranek

“Bothered, Bewildered” by Rob Williams from Foolish Hearts: New Gay Fiction (Cleis Press, 2014).

Sea-monkeys, The Clapper, Bewitched, Atari…the main character of this story and I had the same childhood.

Well, okay. Not exactly the same. There are a few key differences. He’s in California, for one; he’s a boy; he’s gay; and he’s devious enough to concoct a wild yarn about having magical powers in order to take advantage of his neighbor, Jimmy, during a sleepover.

Hmm. On further reflection that last may be simply a matter of opportunity.
