On our first ever trip to New Orleans last year we stayed at the St. Vincent Guest House. It was inexpensive and had just the mix of history and decay I was seeking. The operative word there is “I”. The other member of my party would have been happier somewhere, uh, newer.
As it turns out, I would have liked to be closer to the streetcar line. Hiking seven blocks or so to and from the main thoroughfare in the heat and humidity of NOLA, often in the dark, in a place where sidewalks are an adventure (or a rumor they’ve heard exist elsewhere), coupled with being way out in the Garden District did detract from the charm of the place after about half a week.
Did I mention it was cheap? It was $34/night. And we didn’t go all that way to sit in a hotel room.
Yeah, yeah. Just wait until you see the interior.
