Short Stories 365/227 | N.S. Beranek

“Detox” by Elspeth Potter from So Fey: Queer Fairy Fiction by Lethe Press (2009). Edited by Steve Berman.

This story is fantastic. It’s fresh, original, unexpected, and humorous. I loved it.

Maria enjoys all the perks of having a brownie living in her house. She sets out a few treats for him every night, and every morning wakes looking more nubile than the day before. She’s practically aging in reverse, ala Benjamin Button. She spends her days lounging around the house, pampering herself. Nights she spends clubbing, picking up gorgeous women half her actual age, until….

They say you should never anger a Brownie, because they each have a malevolent side. Apparently the rules are a wee bit more complicated than that.
